Not London... No... But I have seen a city of gold, built in towers of steps that rose to the sun... I have seen forests so thick the sun never touched the ground... I have been to the mountains... and I have been to the hot lands... to the place of the great cats... And I have seen the leviathan that men call mammoth, or elephant. It had two tails, one in front, and one behind. In the frozen north there is a sea of ice. There are white bears there. Like all bears... in their own places... they do not dance... In the east there are small men of great valor who eat food with sticks... they thought I was their ancestor, and a god, although I told them I was not... In the American Colonies I saw wonders: huge shaggy-pelted oxen who roam the land from sky to sky and dawn to dawn... and there is no ending of them.... I have seen deserts of white sand and red sand and grey sand... I have seen the ocean, green in its majesty, a limitless wold of deep water, grander than either of us could imagine... But you believe me as much as I believed the travelling man... who told me of green men with plants for hair in the far antipodes... But I have seen these things, Simon, old friend, and you... You will see nothing more... on this earth. There are some who say that we return, life after life... our bodies simply garments that we change... like a rich man would change his shirt once every week... Others say there are places to go when we die... places of pleasure... or pain.... Some say that death is the final night, a sleep from which no man can wake. I do not know... I no longer sleep... I did not die... I have heard the wise and holy argue and explain these matters... I have spoken about it to one who claimed to have walked the stars... and all I know... is that I... who am closer to the cycle of life and death than most... even I know nothing for certain! But wherever your... soul... has gone... my friend... I hope it rests... at peace...
- Neil Gaiman, "Jack in the Green"
You can compromise on a lot of things, but you can't compromise on the girl.
- Tom Spezialy and Kevin Dowling, "Ends and Means"
I don't know what I mean either.
"My Work Here is Done"
The vending machines at FARC have driven the price of cupcakes from $.75 to $.85.
It's time for me to leave this place.
"Now I've Been Saying that Shit for Years..."
I've delved further into my investigations of the Sabrina Lloyd phenomenon, and stumbled upon Tom Cavanagh playing some schlub named Howard in an episode of Sports Night entitled "The Giants Win the Penant, The Giants in the Penant." (Cavanagh is an actor from Ed. If I have to tell you which role is his, then you should go play in traffic.) Now, I don't know what any of it means. Maybe I'm Howard, and you're all Pixley and I'm trying to win you over. Or maybe I'm Casey, and it's the world that's Howard and clueless to my burning desire to escape a plan that leaves me feeling empty. Or perhaps I'm just bored. (He plays, the title character. You know, Ed?)
"Like Father, Like Son"
My father is retiring. For the first time in my life, my father won't be in the military. He's not sure what he's going to do, but maybe they'll need English majors, too.
Wait long enough and it all shakes out evenly.
Latin ho.
